Rings of Supersonic Steel: Air Defenses of the United States Army 1950-1974 ISBN: 0-615-12012-1
US Strategic and Defensive Missile Systems 1945-1990 ISBN: 1-841-76838-3
Should both be available at: http://www.amazon.com/
By the way, Site Summit, Alaska has always claimed to be the "Last Battery to Defend America." I have [SSgt Charles Carter] done some research and discovered the Florida units were actually the last operation Nike unites to defend America.
According to Rings of Supersonic Steel III, Morgan & Berhew, 2010,:
Therefore, even though the last Nike Hercules unit to serve as an operation air defense unit "anywhere" was in Germany, the last operation Nike Hercules air defense installation to defend the continental United States were the units in south Florida, specifically, the 2nd Missile Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery (ADA). I would like to find out which of the four 2nd 52nd units was the last deactivated unless they were ordered to "stand down" simultaneously.
This is not to "put down" anyone and their claims to bragging rights but to ensure the record is accurate.
Charles
